The original pipe organ was built by the Hinners Organ Co. of Pekin, IL. It was a tracker-action instrument of 7 ranks: Great 8' Open Diapason, 8' Melodia, and 8' Dulciana; Swell 8' Stopped Diapason, 8' Salicional, and 4' Harmonic Flute; and Pedal 16' Bourdon. The organ was placed across the front of the chancel and recessed into an alcove. The case was of quarter- sawn oak, and the façade contained 57 pipes including the first 27 of the Great 8' Open Diapason. The keydesk was attached and projecting. In 1958, the organ was rebuilt, electrified, and enlarged by Balcom and Vaughan of Seattle. The Swell 4' Harmonic Flute was omitted from the Swell, and an 8' Oboe and 8' Voix Celeste were added. A new 4' Octave was added to the Great. A new B & V console with Klann couplers and combination action controlled the instrument which was placed behind the original façade. The chimes were prepared for, and were added later. By 1984, the organ was suffering from electrical problems. The church got bids from different companies, including Balcom and Vaughan, who had electrified the organ in 1958. Ultimately, the church chose to have the firm of Casavant-Frères, Ltée. of Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., Canada build a new organ retaining some of the existing pipework from the original 1912 Hinners. The new organ was to be installed behind the original Hinners façade. The entire instrument was shipped to the Casavant factory in 1984. It was returned to the church after 13 months of work in September of 1985, and it took four people 2½, 6-day weeks to complete the re- installation, which was then followed by two weeks of tonal regulation and finishing by two Casavant voicers. The project cost $127,000.00, and the organ was rededicated on Friday, May 15, 1986 by Joan Ringerwole, professor of Organ at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa where church Choir Director John D. Maas had attended. The Hoofdwerk 8' Prestant borrows its first 12 notes from the Pedal 8' Prestant. The Zwelwerk 8' Gemshoorn borrows its bottom 12 notes from the 8' Holpijp. The entire Pedal 8' Praestant /4' Octaaf unit are the original Hinners Open Diapason pipes, mostly in the façade. The Zwelwerk 8' Holpijp is the original Hinners Swell 8' Stopped Diapason. The Pedal 16' Subbass is composed of original Hinners pipes: 1-12 are the original 16' Bourdon, and notes 13-24 are the original Great Melodia bass. The Great Glocken are a set of used Deagan chimes added by John D. Maas in 1996. Sources: Eugene M.
